Arlyn BradshawArlyn was elected to the Salt Lake County Council in November of 2010.  At the age of 29, he is the youngest County Council Member ever elected in Utah, as well as the first openly gay person elected at the county level.  Arlyn is currently serving as the Council representative on the Board of Health and the Visit Salt Lake Now Executive Board. Additionally, he sits on the Planned Parenthood Association of Utah board (PPAU).

For the three years prior to his election, Arlyn served as Council Advisor to Salt Lake County Council Chairman Joe Hatch.  This was a dynamic period for the council because for the first time since the council’s inception, it saw a Democratic majority.  During this time Arlyn oversaw many key policy initiatives, including securing domestic partner benefits for county employees, regulating pay day lending, enacting a labor friendly meet and confer ordinance, and working to enact the county’s first LGBT anti-discrimination ordinance in the areas of housing and employment.

Arlyn has remained politically engaged on both the local and national level. He has served as the Executive Director of the Utah Democratic Party, played a major role in numerous Democratic campaigns, and served as a Congressional Aide to Congressman Jim Matheson. His experience working at multiple levels of government gives Arlyn a unique understanding of not only the legislative process, but of how the county government interacts with both state and federal entities.

Arlyn received a Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Utah’s executive program in May 2010. He also holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Utah, with an emphasis in International Relations and the German language. While a student, he was very active in several campus organizations.  He served as president of the Lesbian Gay Student Union, the College Democrats and the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.  Additionally, he was appointed to the ASUU cabinet as the Director of Government Relations.  While a student, he was awarded the Matheson Leadership Forum scholarship and was the university’s Delegation Chair to the Utah Intercollegiate Assembly.  Along with his scholastic achievements, Arlyn also became a die hard Ute fan.

Originally from rural Idaho, Arlyn has been active in Utah politics and the University of Utah community for over a decade.  He currently lives in the Marmalade area with his partner, Neil Webster.  They have two pit bulls, Bella and Atticus, and a dachshund named Fritz.
